Great FREE Service for eBay Sellers - Garage Sale Finder

Yay, it's garage sale time again! Only eBay nerds will understand the excitement of this time of year. Those critical few hours on Friday and Saturday are golden - make sure you are making the most of your time and hitting the biggest sales that have the stuff you want.

Garage sale apps have come and go over the last few years, so we have to adapt and keep up with the changes. I am using Garage Sale Finder. I do my recon work at home before I go and download the stops to my GPD. It is a free site, and does the following:

1. Identifies sales within a specified radius of your home address. You decide what the radius is.

2. Color codes different types of sales.

3. Click on the sales that interest you to read description, dates and times, and directions.

4. View photos if the seller has uploaded them. (Not all sales have photos.)

5. Pick your favorites and plan your route. You can download your stops to your GPS device, or print a list to take with you.

6. The site serves these major cities:

7. Be a super planner and get notifications in your inbox. Just set the criteria for your favorite kinds of sales and you will be notified when one hits the site.

Again, this is a free site.  Visit Garage Sale Finder here and give it a try!

Make sure to check out my 30 day YouTube Challenge. There are new playlists and a daily lesson on what to sell, keywords, and FAQs. You can set the play list to play uninterrupted and listen to a whole string of videos while you work.

eBay Seller Success Story - Seller with Debilitating Arachnoiditis Shares her Strategies

My friend Tootie, a dedicated and talented eBay seller, suffers from Arachnoiditis but debilitating pain doesn't stop her. Read how she makes eBay work even as she deals with an illness that would cause most of us to give up.

I have been selling on eBay since November of 2013. My best friend and old neighbor convinced me to give it a try.  I started selling all of our "stuff" that we had accumulated around the house. To my surprise, I made TRS in January of 2014.

I became very ill in the Spring of 2011. I have had 24 surgeries in my life and 15 of them in the last 8 years since my son was born. I became medically anorexic, started losing bone mass, had some major intestinal issues requiring huge surgeries. I spontaneously broke three ribs all while working as a dental hygienist. I would go long periods unable to walk. I was in horrendous pain 24/7. Not just a little pain but burning hot pain that feels like red hot barbed wire wrapped around the feet, legs, back and upper ribs. It became too much, I had to give up my career of 18 years as Registered Dental Hygienist.

No one knew what was wrong with me including me. Finally, in the Spring of 2013 I was diagnosed by my beloved neurosurgeon as having Arachnoiditis. I had never even heard this word before but I will never forget what he said, "This is the end for you, there is nothing we can do for you." With that being said, it began a bit of a relief and a nightmare all at the same time.

Arachnoiditis is an incurable disease of the spinal cord or arachnoid meninge, sort of like a permanent meningitis. It is usually caused by trauma to the spinal cord either by surgical trauma or epidural steroid injections. (Which I might add are incredibly dangerous-I highly advise against epidural steroid injections for the treatment of pain).
I have been hospitalized more than 40 times directly related to Arachnoiditis. I am left unable to walk during flare ups of this awful disease. Therefore, the hospital keeps me days on end. As of late, I have been trying to get through these flare ups at home on my own but it is equally as difficult on me and my family no matter where  I am.

I am constantly in pain, day in and day out. I am unable to sit long, stand long or do any strenuous activity even as simple as a nice brisk walk.  This is a new life for me. I spent my life as a pillar of health and fitness and now I am rendered completely unable to exercise or do simple activities I once enjoyed.

So as for eBay, I have to find a delicate balance. eBay is not physically easy at times.  There is a lot of bending, twisting, reaching, sitting, carrying. walking etc. Things most people don't have to think about. Because of these reasons I have to pick and choose when I work.  Basically, I work when I can. Ask any family member, if I am not bedridden, I am in the loft doing eBay. My 8 year old has threatened to ground me from eBay!

I sell mostly clothing, and really anything I can get my hands on.  I have learned that there is a market for pretty much anything and eBay never disappoints me in what sells.I am on my own as far as the business goes.  My husband occasionally will pull an item here and there and might ship if I am hospitalized or bedridden. He will also model for me on occasion (which I really appreciate) For the most part I do everything on my own.

I "thrift" once a week on Tuesday.  Here in my valley we have a local swap meet (aka flea market possibly) many vendors come to one place and present their items that are available to purchase. This literally is my favorite day EVER!!! I am so sad if I have a flare up on a Tuesday. Not to worry, they also have them on Saturday and Sunday but I love my Tuesday swap!  Over the years, I have developed amazing relationships with these vendors.  Each one has their own niche of items to pick from making it a slam dunk each week. I have my favorite four vendors that I do business with regularly.  I get such amazing prices it is almost unbelievable.  I sometimes do trades with some vendors of my items that are not "eBay worthy" for things that I think will be a winner. I will let one of my vendors have a garage sale in my driveway twice a year and in return he gives me almost cost for his items. He is my most amazing vendor with an eye for dollar signs, he also has an eBay store.  He does most of his shopping at The Goodwill Outlet, the others buy estate sales, and storage lockers.

Currently I have 430 items listed. I worked super hard to get to 300 listing because I kept selling so much.  I finally made it to 320 in January and worked super hard to get to over 400 by March.

As of January and February I have profited more than $2500 and my sales are up approximately 38% this month.  I sold 87 items in February and have already sold 31 items as of today March 7.

As I mentioned above, I work when I can which is an added bonus of having an at home business. I think the best thing to do to get your business going is to sit down and list. I have one rule, I am not able to buy more inventory until I have everything I bought on Tuesday listed. I only have 50 square feet to work in so I think it is important to get organized and make a pile of the items you want to list and set a time frame for yourself to do them, and then do it.  Once you start doing it and accomplishing your tasks it get you more motivated especially once the sales start rolling in.  And, those of you who do not think the sales will come, trust me they will.  I have learned anything and most everything sells on eBay.

My customers are my diamonds and I treat them as such. My store is not perfect nor are my photos but my customers are the reason my store runs, so I strive for perfection in customer service. In just a couple of years I have developed relationships with customers and have had several repeat buyers or people who periodically check with me for a special or unique item.

ebay has saved my life in a way. It has given me my independance and self worth back after suffering the loss of my profession and health and fitness. Aside from my family, I have a new reason to live! I could have never imagined I would have a significant income from doing a job like this.  It's just a no-brainer. Like a shirt I recently saw, "Eat, Sleep, eBay, Repeat"......Seriously words to live by. I couldn't be happier with my new profession!

The Holiday Clock is Ticking - Let's Get Ready!

Can you believe it is already November 9th? If you haven't gotten your ducks in a row for the Christmas selling season on eBay, there is still time. 4th quarter is the busiest time of the year for retailers, and that includes us! Make sure you cash in on holiday selling this year, as business analysts project it's going to be busy:

Kiplinger reports, "Thanks to months of solid gains, retailers are poised for healthy sales growth through the end of the year. Increased consumer confidence and disposable income, a tightening labor market and low gasoline prices will help drive spending during the fourth quarter. Economic improvements will push holiday sales higher by 3.5% to 4% over 2014. Holiday transactions represent about one-fifth of all retail sales." (Kiplinger.com)

Inc says, "Latest retail holiday sales forecast is projecting as much as $965 billion in sales between November and January, a 4 percent increase over last year's shopping season (excluding motor vehicles and gas). Though more than 90 percent of retail sales occur in-store, nearly 80 percent of shoppers say they engage with brands and retailers through digital channels before they set foot inside a store." (Inc.com)

Did you hear that? 80% of shoppers check out what's online before going to a store - so make sure everything you are doing on eBay is optimized for the holiday buying season. Here are a few ways you can maximize your eBay sales over the next 7 weeks:

1. If it isn't listed, list it NOW. That means anything. Even if you don't think it would be a gift or it is out of season. When you don't list your items (you know, those piles that grow overnight) you are basically helping other sellers get sales because nobody can buy yours. Don't leave money on the table because you didn't get items listed.

2. If at all possible, change handling time to same day or 1 day. Procrastinators abound, especially during holiday season. Shoppers will be in a rush. They will be looking for sellers who ship quickly. And not just the week of Christmas. Shoppers may have to pack up for a trip, want to ship out care packages, or freak out if they aren't ready 2 weeks early. Everyone loves a quick shipper!

3. Stay educated on what toys and hot items are in short supply and can be sold on eBay for above retail prices. That's right, plenty of retail products go for a premium around this time of year because they are out of stock in stores. This happens every year. Some past hot toys and holiday items I have flipped on eBay or Amazon:

Zhu Zhu Pets (2009)

LaLa Loopsy Dolls (2010)

Canned pumpkin (2011)

Furbys (2013)

A current example, Lays  chocolate potato chips cost about $3 in stores and they sell on eBay for around $12 a bag.

To help you even more with your holiday selling, I am offering a special Holiday Help Hotline this week only, on Thursday - Saturday (Nov  12- 14). Book a 20 minute phone consultation for only $20.

Amazon Success Story - 5 Years Later

I received this email a couple of weeks ago from a client I worked with in 2010 (5 years ago). His story is inspiring and shows that with hard work and a commitment to success, anything can be achieved. Am so proud of you Jorge and for what you have accomplished.

"Hello, Suzanne.  I can't recall ever taking this long to reply, but I am going to look at things on the bright side and say that it's  'better late than never.'  With many apologies included, of course :)

How could I summarize almost 5 years in a single email?  It makes sense to start from where I am today and go back.

I have over 10,000 transactions under my belt selling on Amazon, mostly from DVD orders fulfilled by Amazon.  Amazingly enough, I have been able to maintain 100% positive feedback, though it's been no easy task.  I have had plenty of customer service issues to deal with, but fortunately I've been able to resolve all but one (and that one doesn't bring me under 99.5% positive so it rounds out to 100%).

I have been making a living selling on Amazon since October of 2012, when I was able to quit the 9 to 5.  It hasn't always been smooth sailing, but I have maintained gross profits above the minimum desired level for going on 3 years now.

I am now at a crossroads, again.  I have recently resumed working on getting approval to sell DVDs with MSRPs over $25.  I worked on getting approval full time between September and November of last year (selling on Amazon became part time, but with full time pay luckily).

After the new policy took effect in mid November, I then started working on getting back up to where I was when I could sell the newly restricted DVDs.  My profits dropped 50% in December of 2014 compared to the prior year, and January of this year was also a bit rough.  But then I was back up to speed in February, and since March I have actually doing better than I had been in prior years.  So far my sales are up around 25% compared to the year to date numbers in 2013 and 2014, and YTD gross profits are even higher compared to 2013 and 2014.

So what was once an oversight is now my core business.  If I could get approval for the over $25 MSRP DVDs and could apply the newly acquired sourcing techniques, I could comfortably triple what I was averaging in 2013 and 2014.

That, in a nutshell, is what has been going on with my business.  There are plenty more details naturally, but it is certainly not my intention to give you an overwhelming account of what's happened in the past few years.  If you would like to know some more specifics out of curiosity or if you feel you might find some of these details useful, then please let me know and I would be happy to share anything you would like to know.

Can't say so long for now without thanking you again for having made all of this possible.  Your coaching gave me the foundation for everything I am currently doing in my business.  I remember that you even covered flipping eBay items, though at the time I had no idea that would become my primary sourcing method.

It would be nice to know how you are doing, time permitting of course.  I imagine you might be as busy as you were before or possibly more so.  I remember back in 2010 you were involved in a number of different things.  I just do one thing and that definitely keeps me quite occupied.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Jorge"

Discontinued Shampoo to Sell on eBay - Redken Densify Shampoo for Men

Redken for Men Thick Boost Densify has been discontinued. It normally sells for about $19 a bottle at stores like Ulta and salons. This shampoo is selling for $50 and up per bottle on both eBay and Amazon. Here are a few examples of recent sales:

Lot of 3 bottles of Redken for Men Densify sold for $149 on May 15

1 Bottle sold for $54.99 on May 14

As of this writing, there are no full size bottles for sale on eBay (which means you can set your price if you find it).

There are 4 offers on Amazon starting at $44.00 + $4.89 shipping.

As you can see, discontinued health and beauty items can mean big profits on eBay. Look for these items at close out stores like Big Lots, WalMart, Target, salons, and other stores that sell hair care products. If you want to know how to identify discontinued items that sell for big profit, I am happy to share my process during a phone consultation. Book your appointment today and stop leaving money on the table!

Make sure you are subscribed to my blog to receive email updates on other profitable discontinued items.

Why Aren't You Listing Winter Clothing on eBay in the Summer?

Sounds kind of silly, right? I mean, who in their right mind is going to buy winter clothing online when it is 90 or even 100 degrees outside? Plenty of people, that's who! Remember the motto, "People can't buy what isn't listed."

Here are a few examples from my eBay store, Atlanta Golf  Shop, of winter items I have sold this summer. So you can see the proof is in the pudding. Some items have been listed a while, others were newly listed. Bottom line - if you list it, they will come!

I think you get the idea. This post isn't to brag but to show what is possible. eBay knows no seasons. If you find it, list it. If you have it, list it. If you aren't listing winter clothing in the summer you are leaving money on the table. And maybe a lot of money.

Make Money Selling Lots of Scrabble Tiles on eBay

Here is another "odds and ends" type item you can make money selling on eBay - Scrabble tiles. Scrabble games are an easy find at garage sales and thrift stores. Rather than selling and shipping the entire game (where the box may be crushed or torn and unappealing anyway), salvage the tiles. Let them accumulate over time and you have a item that is easy to ship in a padded flat rate envelope for $5.35 (with your eBay discount).

Your next question might be, who the heck would buy several hundred or thousand Scrabble tiles? Crafters, that's who. And what can be made from a bunch of random Scrabble tiles? Here are some examples:

Baby Gifts

Coasters

Teacher Gifts

Jewelry

Christmas Ornaments

You get the idea. eBay shows 682 sold listings for "Scrabble Tiles" in used condition. You can sell the wooden letter racks in lots as those are used for crafts also. The colored tiles will sell for more as they are more scarce. (Remember, the more scarce something is the more it is worth.) Just a ball park figure - a lot of 300 wooden tiles sells for about $25.

So make yourself a little Scrabble Tile stockpile area and start adding to it when you see incomplete or less than optimal Scrabble games at garage sales and thrift stores. Crafters will thank you!

6 Tips for Shopping at Goodwill Outlets for eBay Merchandise

eBay sellers love the thrill of the hunt. Shopping and scavenging for inventory can almost be an addition. Once source of inventory is Goodwill Outlets. For those unfamiliar with a Goodwill Outlet, here are the facts:

Goodwill Stores is shipped to outlets all over the country.

Merchandise in Goodwill Outlets can be sold by the pound, commonly priced at 99 cents per pound. Merchandise can also be sold by the piece for about 75% off the regular Goodwill Store prices.

The same type of merchandise is sold in Goodwill Outlets that is sold in regular Goodwill Stores. The difference is that the items may be sorted by type (shoes, appliances, tools, etc.), or just brought out in huge bins for customers to sort through.

Goodwill Outlet shopping is a free for all. The experience can be totally chaotic and more like a stampede than an eBay sourcing trip. Be prepared to be pushed, shoved, bumped into, or even cursed at. Goodwill Outlets are not for the faint of heart.

eBay sellers who are up for the challenge of shopping at a Goodwill Outlet should be prepared. Here are some tips from seasoned eBay sellers for making the most out of your Goodwill Outlet visit.

1. Arrive early. It is not unusual for the line to form before the store opens.

2. Bring gloves. Since digging through bins is part of the drill, it is best to protect your hands. All kinds of gross items are hiding in the bins including bugs, small dead rodents, snakes, broken glass, metal shards, dirty underwear, used hypodermic needles, dirty diapers, or animal or human feces.

3. Don't start shopping until management blows the whistle - you can be kicked out for not following the rules.

4. Bring sheets to cover your cart. Other shoppers will pillage carts fill of merchandise.

5. Use a hanger or "grabber" to help reach items in the back or bottom of the bins.

6. Don't take babies or small children to the outlets. Not only can the outlets be unsanitary, but they are chaotic and small children can get lost in the shuffle.

Everything is sold as is - no returns or exchanges.

Even though shopping at the GWO can be a challenge, eBay sellers have reported finding some prime items in the bins. Some good finds reported on my eBay Sellers Facebook Group:

Queen Bee book that sold for $60

Leather jacket that sold for $750

Vera Bradley pet carrier sold for $60

Designer wool coats sold for over $100 each

Gurka duffle bag sold for $250

Burberry cape sold for $297

Patagonia top sold for $124

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. GWOs are only located in certain areas of the country. Find one near you at www.gwoutletstorelocator.com.

eBay Consignment Done Right - Seller Offers 140,000 Consigned Items for Sale

If you are thinking about adding consignment to your eBay business model, you must take a look at Linda's Stuff - the largest consignment seller on eBay. Linda's Stuff was founded by Linda Lightman who started her consignment business in 2000 after seeing the power of eBay when selling her son's video games. Then she moved on to selling her own clothes. After a while, friends noticed Linda's success and began asking her to sell their items on eBay. Many of you reading this are in the exact same situation - you know how to navigate and sell on eBay, your friends know you have this skill, and you and want to grow without investing money in additional income.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Linda about her business to show the amazing power of eBay as well as the opportunities available to anyone who wants to tap into the eBay marketplace. I addressed some common questions asked by both new and seasoned eBay sellers on my Facebook group and privately through consulting and email.

Enjoy the following interview and take note of how a real pro does it!

Q: There are currently 140,000 items listed in Linda's Stuff eBay Store. Is this about the usual amount that is listed all the time?
Linda's Stuff:  Yes, this is the usual amount we list on Linda’s Stuff.

Q: There is a mix of auctions and fixed price items. What is the strategy for determining what format an item will be listed?
Linda's Stuff: All items on Linda’s Stuff starts on an auction/ bidding.  When items do not sell, it is then moved to a ‘Buy it Now.’

Q: Linda's Stuff offers a 14 day return policy. How many returns do you usually receive a month?
Linda’s Stuff: Our return rate is about 10% in a month.

Q: Based on feedback numbers, it appears that Linda's Stuff sells about 18,000 items a month. Is this an accurate estimate?
Linda’s Stuff: We sell about 25K-30K a month, (although we wish everyone would leave feedback- buyers sometimes do not).

Q: On the listings I researched, Linda's Stuff does not use eBay's Global Shipping program. Why not?
Linda's Stuff: We thoughtfully made the decision  to not use eBay’s Global Shipping program, as we are happy with our current shipping model.

Q: Your company employs over 100 people. What different kinds of tasks do your employees do?
Linda's Stuff: With over 110 employees, the roles in our business vary from Marketing to Listers to Photographers, Customer Service and so on.  Each person contributes to the organization and management of Linda’s Stuff.

Q: Do you hire employees with eBay selling experience?
Linda's Stuff: eBay experience is not a requirement, as we provide training to all our employees.

Q: Linda's Stuff has been in business for 15 years. What is one piece of advice you can give the smaller "at home" seller to improve their eBay business?
Linda's Stuff: It’s important to do your research when listing items and market them in a way that entices your audience.  Customer service is also important, as if a person has a good experience with you, you build brand loyalty, trust and retention.

Make sure you check out Linda's Stuff on eBay and study how she does it.

Denim Trucker Jackets are a Consistent Seller on eBay

Add denim trucker jackets to your BOLO (be on the lookout) list for things to flip on eBay. Thanks to my friend Magi and all the other savvy sellers on my eBay Seller Facebook group for teaching me about this item. I finally found and sold one! The above screen shot is of my sale, an item that cost just a few dollars at a local thrift store. I had this item for sale in my eBay store for about 6 months with best offer. It sold for full price, $79.97 last week (in June).

A denim trucker jacket is usually made of heavy weight denim and lined with fleece. They are waist length and made by the major denim manufacturers including Levis, Lee, and Wrangler. eBay shows over 2,400 sold listings for these jackets.

I'm putting this out there for 2 reasons:

1. The power of community. Surround yourself with people who know more than you do. You will continue to increase your knowledge base simply by association.

2. Don't hesitate to list an item in the off season. It is impossible for something to sell when it is sitting in a bag in the corner and not listed on eBay. Refer to this article:

No Free Listings Left - So What?

Add denim trucker jackets to your BOLO list and keep on listing!
